Captains, Greeters and Ushers Guidelines

This guide is provided to help our Captains, Greeters and Ushers understand their respective responsibilities.

The Captain of the Month will be in charge of the four persons involved each Sunday: two Greeters and two Ushers. If the Greeters have children, they are welcome to help greet.

The Captain of the Month

1) Each week call the Greeters and Ushers to remind them of their commitment before they are scheduled to serve. Call as far in advance as you think necessary.

2) If someone can’t serve, call on others to fill in that week. Please call the Church office with any changes so that the correct names are in the bulletin.

3) Each Sunday take the head count during the offering; remember to include the choir, pianist, organist, Pastor, those in the balcony, kitchen workers and nursery school teachers. Log it in on the calendar in the drawer in the little stand at the back of the sanctuary.

The Greeters

1) Arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes before the service and stand at the entrance to the sanctuary. (There should be a package of name tag labels in the stand below the bell tower rope.) It is recommended that Greeters identify themselves with a name tag to make it easier for people to introduce themselves as they come in.

2) When people arrive, welcome them and hand them the bulletin for the service. When the pastor begins the morning announcements before the service, you can take your seats.

3) When the children are dismissed for Sunday school, go to the back of the sanctuary and form up behind the Ushers and walk up the center aisle. When you are standing at the Communion Table, remain in the center, the Ushers will hand you a collection plate.

Simply turn around and start the collection from the center aisle on the side that you are on. Stay in line with "your partner" on the outside aisle.

When you are finished, form up again at the back. When the Doxology ("Praise God from whom all blessings flow…") is sung, follow the Ushers to the front and stand in front of the Communion Table. Say the Prayer of Gratitude – looking on with the Usher next to you who has the bulletin. After the Usher takes your plate, turn around and walk down the center aisle with the Ushers behind you and move back to your seat.

4) When you are scheduled for a particular Sunday, and you are unable to serve, contact others from the group for that month to find a replacement with whom you may "trade Sundays." After finding a replacement, contact your Captain so that he / she can update the list and have it corrected for the bulletin.

The Ushers

1) Arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes before the service. (There should be a package of name tag labels in the stand below the bell tower rope.) It is recommended that Ushers identify themselves with a name tag to make it easier for people to introduce themselves as they come in.

2) Watch and stay aware of how the pews are filling. Everyone will not need to be taken to their seats in the beginning. However, as the sanctuary fills, you can play a key role in helping a person find a seat by asking people to shift a bit in their seats to fit more people in the pew. Remain standing until the middle of the first hymn to help seat the late comers.

3) Find a seat at the back of the sanctuary, near the end of a pew. It will be easier for you to get up from this position.

4) The Greeters will help you collect the offering; however, you need to ask one additional person from the congregation to take the small basket (that’s kept on the back table) up to the balcony to collect the offering. Stanya Jimenez is usually willing to do this.

5) When the children are dismissed for Sunday school, the Ushers should get up and go to the back of the sanctuary and form up with the Greeters behind you. Begin to walk up as soon as you are assembled, don’t wait for the music.

As you walk up the center aisle and get to the Communion Table, you should move to the outside and take the collection plates from the table (or the front pew if it is a Communion Sunday) on your side, turn and give one to the Greeter on your side and then move to the outside aisle on your side and start the collection. Stay in line with "your greeter" on the inside aisle.

When you are finished, form up again at the back with the Greeters behind you (adding any balcony collection to your plate) – be sure to have a copy of the service bulletin with you to be ready to share the reading of the Prayer of Gratitude with the Greeter next to you. When the Doxology ("Praise God from whom all blessings flow…") is sung, walk back to the front and stand in front of the Communion Table, taking the outside position. Say the Prayer of Gratitude, sharing your bulletin with the Greeter next to you. Then set your plate and your Greeter’s plate back on the Table (or on the end of the front pew). Walk back down the center aisle in back of the Greeters and return to your seat.

6) Since you are seated near the back of the sanctuary, be aware of anyone that may get up and leave the Sanctuary for health or other reasons. Help them get through the doors and make sure they shut quietly. Ask them if you can be of assistance; if there is a serious health concern, be prepared to ask for additional assistance or get to a phone and make a "9-1-1" call.

7) When you are scheduled for a particular Sunday, and you are unable to serve, contact others from the group for that month to find a replacement with whom you may "trade Sundays." After finding a replacement, contact your Captain so that they can update the list and have it corrected for the bulletin.
